Harmony House Extension

Newbury OH | 2023 | Sunroom and Deck Extension

The Harmony House Extension, completed in 2023 by Studio Kekedy, exemplifies our commitment to blending modern design with the natural environment. Located in Newbury, Ohio, this project transforms the rear elevation of the house by integrating a new sunroom and walk out deck space to create a seamless transition that pulls the occupant from indoor comfort out to the lush northeastern Ohio Landscape.

Before the extension, the Harmony House had minimal outdoor connectivity, limited to a side door from the dining room. The design was intended to reimagine this space through a sunroom and walk out deck that encourage an immersive outdoor experience. The existing fireplace, once a feature of the living room and an afterthought on the exterior elevation, now serves as a central focal point, clad in stone and framed by two glass doors that lead into the sunroom. This redesign enhances aesthetic continuity and anchors the new extension.

The heart of this project is the new sunroom, encased in glass windows and doors which immerses the occupants in a panoramic view of the wooded landscape. Skylights and expansive windows flood the space with natural light, making it airy and bright. The sunroom’s rear and side doors can open to transform the space by extending into the outdoor deck and creating a fluid indoor-outdoor experience

Incorporating the stone elements from the front elevation into the rear extension ensures a cohesive aesthetic, avoiding the common pitfall of treating the rear as an afterthought. This approach prioritizes the occupant’s experience, demonstrating the modern, simple design can elevate a home beyond mere curb appeal.
